If you’re like me, you aren’t old enough to experience the night life of Portland. It seems that everything after-hours requires an ID. So what’s there to do when you’re itching to get out, but you can’t get in to 21+ places? I prefer the following places which have excellent food and foster friendly and relaxing environments.

  • Le Bistro Montage: (301 SE Morrison) located underneath the Morrison Bridge on the east side. Once you enter, it’s hard not to enjoy yourself in the dimly lit room with music blasting and shared community tables. And trust me, if you’re craving mac-n-cheese, this is the place to go. Everything they serve is delicious, and they always give away the most creative to-go packages.
  • The Roxy: (1121 SW Stark) This 24hr joint has basically everything that you’d crave at 2 or 3am, minus alcohol and ice cream. It’s 15 minutes from campus, and…

Summer=Good (fresh) food

I just realized that I’ve really fallen behind on posting regularly. The past week has been pretty busy with some job interviews, some fun time, music, and dancing. The summer life is pretty good.

Over the past couple of days, I’ve decided that I not only need to learn how to cook, but to cook well. It’s rather annoying to have to constantly rely on the dining hall for a good meal–it’s just not going to happen. So I’ve taken to stocking fruit in my room, which has actually been a bit of challenge. I’ve already had to deal with fruit flies and some other kind of annoying pest. But I think that I got it under control now. I’m just hoping that my suite-mate doesn’t mind having so much stuff in the kitchen (and that she doesn’t eat it either!).

Tonight for dinner I made myself a half of a sandwich with a delicious bun, turkey, avocado, pickled peppers, a little mayo and mustard, topped off with some brie. Redundantly, it was delicious. To go with it on the side, I indulged in a banana and cooked some simple asparagus with olive oil and the classic salt and pepper.

Obviously, I’m no chef, but what I made was rather scrumptious, and I don’t feel bad giving myself a little pat on the back for a decent effort and final product.

I really love the summer time. It’s amazing how much fresher everything is, and how good everything tastes. For me, one of my all-time favorites is a classic BLT–which is always so much more delectable during the summer. But more than that, I love how easy it is to bring together friends over food during the summertime. I think the warm (but not too warm) Portland weather is enough for everyone to crawl out of their caves and become their best social creatures.

Summer Home

I’m now fully situated in the dormiest of dorms, Ondine. Moving all of my stuff over here was such a pain in the ass. I didn’t realize I had so much stuff! I don’t know how I accumulated so many things, but it actually took me three days worth of hauling Ikea-sized bags to finally finish the process.

To be honest, I have some mixed feelings about living here. First of all, it smells hardcore of old dorm. Secondly, I have to share a bathroom and a kitchen with some strange, though friendly, Asian exchange students. Lastly, there is no trash room, and it will be an actual adventure for the simple task of removing garbage from my room. On the flip side, my room is really homey, and I can tell that I will enjoy living here by myself this summer. Most of my furniture fits in the room, though there are still a few select items that I’m a little unsure what to do with. Despite that some of my friends and family have shown their disdain for the fact that there is carpet on the floor that is probably 30000 years old, I like having the softer-than-concrete feeling beneath my feet as I wake up in the morning. Plus, it’s easier to vacuum. But the two things that I like the most about my new space are: I can wear whatever clothes or non-clothes that I so choose, and no one will care or peak into my room from an adjacent wall; and that my view is SO much more awesome than my previous room.

Seriously, how could you not want to sit in this uber comfy chair all day and look out the window with the amazing view and the greenery nearby? Goodbye bed, hello papasan.

I love this chair, I love the view, and I love the way that this whole setup looks. I’m no interior designer, but I think that I made the most of what I had. I’m going to enjoy this spot while it lasts.
